Chris Nicholl, the former Aston Villa and Southampton star, has passed away at the age of 77.

The English-born defender, who also represented Northern Ireland at the international level, began his career at Burnley. However, he is most fondly remembered for his stints at Aston Villa and Southampton, where he later took on the role of manager.

Nicholl served as the manager of Southampton for six years before managing Wallsall from 1994 to 1997.

Debuting for Northern Ireland in 1974, Nicholl earned 51 caps for his country. His notable achievement includes playing in all five of Northern Ireland’s matches during the 1982 World Cup, where they triumphed over hosts Spain with a 1-0 victory.
